To resolve the issue, end users or administrators can add the domain of the add-in to the list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer. Use the same procedure whether you're using the Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge browser.

A useful way of narrowing down file locks is to go to the server and use the 'Open Files' node in Computer Management --> System Tools --> Shared Folders. Here you will see a list of files that are currently open on the network share and who has it locked. Sometimes the lock still remains long after the file has been closed.

Alternatively, The Goverlan Admin Suite has a node under the computer that will tell you this right away. Here is some info for any who are interested. You can also kill the lock from Computer Management and Goverlan but beware that if the file is legitimately open, the user may loose unsaved work.

I'm having this same problem in Excel 2013. Stupid question: I assume the 2010 fix above won't work?

Should I just try for giggles? Our outsourced IT team said this is a known Windows 7 bug, and suggested a fix that forces I change settings in my Windows Explorer (reference here: Perhaps I'm being silly, but I don't want to give up functionality I prefer on my PC in order to open and edit a file on a shared drive. Making a copy to replace the original came to mind, but I'm not sure if the original can be 'force deleted' (it's not letting me, of course). Thanks for bearing with the non-IT expert here.:). Hello, I had this exact same issue, and as mentioned above it was due to the member of staff who CREATED the file, as when they opened the spreadsheet it links your Name & Initials to the file, whoever then opened the file as their name was already linked to it, it always thought it was them who had it opened when in fact they didn't. Although I do find quite often staff moan because so and so isn't in the file or no one has the file open, when you look in the location that Raul mentions above, SOMEONE does have it open. I know this is old thread but hopefully this will help someone out.

Using Excel 2016 I was getting the 'another user' error also trying to boot up Repair Log.xlsx. There is typically a temporary hidden lock file created when you have an Excel (or other Office doc) open. In this case there was one called ~$Repair Log.xlsx but it was from a few months ago. I deleted this file and now it's showing the name of the person who has the file open again. You may need to turn on the option to show hidden and system files to see it. Oh Just another possibility.

We had the issue on our Citrix Server farm. Files were on a network server. Ours may have been a bit different.
