Apple keeps the personalization of OS X to a mere minimum for Mac users. We can add a translucent effect to the Menubar, move the Dock to and fro, change the Desktop wallpaper photo, and that’s about it.

For those Mac users whose workflow involves the Desktop (mine usually does not; the Desktop on my Mac is covered with a dozen app windows) in a way that makes the wallpaper visible will appreciate a new and free utility that customizes that which was not easily customized without a special app. It’s called and it’s a decent alternative photo or image viewer for the Desktop. Fill a folder with photos, open Fragment, and it cycles through the photos like a slideshow. Fragment is much like having a mobile, movable Desktop wallpaper system; a folder of images or photos which cycle through in a floating window over the Mac’s built-in wallpaper image, but on that is totally resizable. It also has dozens of transition effects, handles history back-and-forth navigation, and images can be cropped and rotated as needed (depending upon your Mac’s screen size).

There’s an option to use animated GIFs as images to add some motion to the slideshow, and the pan and scan Fill View ensures as much of the photo or image that can be shown, will be shown. One benefit that is built into Fragment is the ability to use it the Mac’s Desktop wallpaper which means you can still navigate, browse, edit, and even delete photos while the app is running.

There’s absolutely no real negative to Fragment. It takes any folder of images or photos and makes them work like Desktop wallpaper overlaid on the Mac’s built-in wallpaper images. It even creates its own thumbnail for easier navigation and viewing, and some of the transition effects are unlike any you’ve seen on the Mac before.

It’s hard to beat what it does and even more difficult to beat free.

I am new to mac, so far absolutely love it, looks like i will be throwing apples through some windows lol. Anyways, i found with preview selecting all photos, say in a folder, (Command key + A) will show photo after photo like windows pic viewer. A program you might wanna check out though is called 'just looking', which is very similar to the windows viewer.
