Hi all, I use Photoshop for work, but unfortunately they cannot get me a license at the moment (I'm only there for another month and a half so not much point really). At any rate, I don't use many of the 'advanced features' of Photoshop anyway. However I do find the cropping/cutting of images really good. Is there an equivalent piece of software I can use for Mac that can. Select parts of an image at a specific ratio (i.e. When you shrink an image down, it would definitely be at 160x120px or something like that).

Shrink images down to a specific size (e.g. I've looked at GIMP, but not sure if it can do that yet.

Any other recommendations? Definately Pixelmator, it's plain awesome and there's this Spider update coming very soon:) For $59, it's the closest app to Photoshop I've ever seen in my life, for like not even 10% of the price.

I've just moved to Mac from PC, and I'm not sure what photo editing proggy I should buy that would be roughly equivalent to Paint Shop Pro. It's native, it makes great use of Leopard's technologies, there are a couple of things better than Photoshop, etc. And each update brings a lot of stuff and is free:) Asking for a 'free' Photoshop-equivalent is pretty extreme IMO. I'm not saying Photoshop is really worth like $1000, but asking for a free app that does as much is a little exagerate! I'm pretty sure Preview can do the cropping for you though!

As with most new versions of long-running image editing programs, PaintShop Pro X8 is more evolution than revolution, but its new and enhanced features certainly give it added appeal. The separate workspaces for image management, quick enhancements and comprehensive edits make the software instantly intuitive, and whilst the Edit workspace does require a steeper learning curve, make the effort and the results will be worthwhile.
